Van Bluemel

Van Bluemel is now an associate professor of physics at Worcester Polytechnical Institute.

In 1996, he was cited for his dedication to the education of his students, his integrity, his commitment to the highest educational aspirations, and his enjoyment of the interaction between student and teacher.

The citation noted that "Professor Bluemel's greatest impact has been through his outstanding advising of projects." - www.wpi.edu/Campus/Faculty/Awards/Teacher/1996

Carl Cecil Cain graduated in from Freeport High School in 1952.

He was a member of the 1951 Freeport High School men's basketball team that won the Illinois State Championship.

He played college basketball at the University of Iowa, where he starred. He earned All Conference and All-American honors.

The Hawkeyes finished second in 1954, then won the Big Ten in both 1955 and 1956.

San Francisco, led by Bill Russell's 26 points beat Iowa in the 1956 national title game. Cain, a 6-3 senior forward, scored 17 points for Iowa.

Carl Cain won a Gold Medal as a part of the 1956 Olympic Men's Basketball team. As far as I know, Carl Cain is the only Freeporter to ever win a medal at the Olympics!
